Project Overview

Zion Nuclear Power Station was the third dual-reactor nuclear power plant in the Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) network and served Chicago and the northern quarter of Illinois. The plant was built in 1973 and housed two 1,100-megawatt pressurized water reactors. The facility was located on 257 acres of Lake Michigan shoreline, in the city of Zion, IL.

EHC was awarded a lump sum contract by Energy Solutions to complete the removal of asbestos from all site structures including the Turbine Bldg., Fuel Handling Bldg., and Unit 1&2 Containments.  The ability to provide an integrated service offering and meet an aggressive time schedule was key to being awarded the contract.  As an integral component of the overall D&D Project, the work scope also includes scaffold installation, containment erection, waste packaging and manifesting, and air sampling and analysis.  The safe completion of work in all areas met or exceeded schedule milestone requirements.
